Smokey Joe’s Café UTEP Dinner Theatre

A revival of Broadway’s longest-running musical revue is a good thing. Such a revival by a talented cast, crew and director? Even better. Add a serving of beef flank steak, green beans almondine, a house salad, dinner rolls and cheesecake with strawberry topping? Why, you have this year’s best. Running from late January to early February, UTEP Dinner Theatre’s production of “Smokey Joe’s Café” showcased nearly 40 pop and rock standards, including classic hits by songwriting team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Showgoers filled the seats, entranced by thrilling performances of “Yakety Yak,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Potion No. 9” and more, all directed by Greg Taylor and unburdened by narrative. They churned out one hit after another, besting lofty competition in this category on their way to the top. 915-747-6060; academics.utep.edu/udt.
