Good artists hold mirrors up to the societies in which they live. Hal Marcus, local Southwestern artist and owner of a namesake gallery, is more like a prism: He refracts and magnifies the light made by other artists. In 10 years his gallery has become a hub for the local trade in paintings, sculptures and prints, with more than 30 border artists represented on the walls of his 10,000-square-foot gallery. On top of that, his own work remains as vital as ever - flush with the same bright colors and optimistic take on the border region. Three years and three Best of the Best issues later, Marcus is still on top. 800 N. Mesa St., 915-533-9090.
