Asarco stacks

Asarco Stacks

For decades, El Pasoans have been used to the towering stacks of ASARCO gracing the city’s skyline. The battle over the demolition of the towers was hotly contested, leaving a hole in some residents’ hearts, and a bitter taste in others. Geoffrey Wright, president of Save the Stacks organization, fought until the very end to protect the structures. The stacks were valued at $14M, and any replacement to honor what has already been destroyed would come too short. Wright, an architect, is a proud El Pasoan, but is sad about the decisions the city has allowed. “It’s not right for people out of town to make decisions, to decide what’s important for us culturally – like Lincoln Center.”
