Jay J. Armes
We wish we could quit you, Jay J. Armes. The self-made man who inspired a ’70s action figure and Stan Lee comic book character has made it back to the top of this list after winning in 2012. Older El Pasoans remember the details of his near-mythic story: the childhood explosion that robbed him of his hands, the brief acting career in Hollywood, the private-eye work that saved dozens of kidnapping victims and spawned a family business, and two terms as a City Councilman. We pass it down to the youth as we drive past his Lower Valley manse, pondering how he spends his days and wondering if the hook-handed legend – now 74 – can still draw a gun with the best of them. 1717 Montana Ave., 915-532-5739; jjarmes.com.
