DJ MTRNX recently removed all the vowels from his name, but he’s never been a fan of “I.” The man also known as George Enriquez earned his stripes by valuing the crowd’s wants more than his own. “I can play the EDM stuff that’s out nowadays, old-school hip-hop or change it to Spanish rock,” he says. “On some days when there’s more of a Latin crowd, I play cumbia and moombahton. I cater to different things.” That selflessness has paid off over a 16-year career that has included a 2004-2008 stint with Power 102, a founding membership with online radio station Fuya Radio, a spot in beloved, now-defunct band Metatron and a five-year-running residency with Tork Bar. A sixth-grade teacher by day, he spins every Friday, Saturday and occasional Thursday. Now his fans, both satisfied and loyal, have crowned him the best.
