Last year was pivotal for Lower Valley ska-punk act Fixed Idea. The band, still going strong after 22 years, contributed a song to a Hellcats/Smelvis Records compilation and won this category for the first time ever. Refusing to rest on their laurels, frontman Pancho Mendoza and crew have an even bigger 2014 lined up. “Cruise To My Blues,” their seventh release, will be the first of two albums out this year. A six-minute preview on Facebook blares with the same crowd-pleasing sounds that have carried them from Ysleta-area house parties to Black Flag opening spots: brassy melodies, irresistible guitar licks and heartsick lyrics laced with Chucotown slang. The album drops this summer.
