The sprawling Eastside has made Horizon City seem much closer these days, and Horizon’s population boom is reaping more restaurant choices. On the corner of Eastlake and Kenazo, you’ll find one of the most diverse restaurants in El Paso County. Sahar serves mostly Mexican food, but they also have a small Persian menu with plans of adding more dishes.
Complimentary chips and salsa verde are brought to your table, but you can also order appetizers like cheese sticks, nachos, queso fundido, quesadillas or Persian dips served with pita bread. Maust o’ kheyar is a yogurt dip with cucumber and fresh herbs, while kashdeh bademjan is roasted eggplant mashed with garlic, onions, mint and kashk (a type of whey that adds a tangy zip).
Breakfast items like machaca, chilaquiles, waffles and more are served all day. Menudo is available during the weekend. With over 20 Mexican lunch and dinner choices, the Mexican plate offers a little bit of everything; one beef taco, a large chile relleno with a light batter, two enchiladas smothered in red sauce with a hint of heat, rice and refried beans with just the right amount of lard.
Six Persian entrees are on the menu, all served with basmati rice. Beef koobideh is the most popular dish, which comes with two skewers of seasoned ground beef, a charbroiled tomato and shirazi salad. Ghormeh sabzy has sauteed pieces of beef with parsley, chives, cilantro and mint leaves, and is then simmered with kidney beans and dried limes. Chicken dishes are also available, like almond raisin chicken and a baked chicken served with barberries.
Dessert options include cheesecake, chocoflan, crepes, tres leches and sopapillas. Be sure to get a cup of Persian tea; the hot black tea tastes of cardamom and other fragrant spices.
Sahar is where Iran meets Mexico in a friendly atmosphere with delicious dishes and affordable prices. Visit their Facebook page to find out when they have live music.
