Venture out to Downtown’s Government District, and you’ll find that the red brick building on the corner of Myrtle and Virginia has been occupied by Downtown Deli since the spring of 2015. A friendly family from New York runs this small lunch spot that will make you feel right at home. While the space is clean and sleek, seating is at a long counter or at one of several folding tables. But the tables get a free pass since they house a variety of mustards found nowhere else in town.
Subs, sandwiches and paninis are made with Thumann’s quality deli meats. Paninis come on sourdough, while subs come on either white or wheat rolls in 6” or 12” sizes with your choice of mayo, mustard, Italian dressing, lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapenos and pickles. Standards like turkey, bologna, ham and Italian (genoa, salami, pepperoni, capicola) are loaded up with sliced cheese and three quarters of a pound of meat. Toasted hot subs include homemade meatballs in marinara, roast beef with beef gravy and bratwurst.
NY classic, Rueben on rye, comes with pastrami, Swiss, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing. The owners may hail from the Bronx, but they’ve infused the menu with southwest specialties that have become customer favorites. The Philly con queso tops thinly sliced steak with their house chile con queso, while the southwest turkey adds spice, bacon, Muenster and avocado.
Sides are sold separately and include Miss Vickie’s chips or their homemade salads; the three bean is just as popular as the creamy potato and macaroni salads. A daily soup and entree salads are also served.
While this deli may not be in the heart of Downtown, they do offer free delivery to the Downtown and UTEP areas. They open at 10:00 am to offer fresh egg sandwiches and oatmeal.
