It’s been over ten years since Chef Tommy Hwang opened the first Mirai Bowl, offering express-style Japanese food with a Korean influence. With the success of three locations spread across town, he opened his fourth location in the quirkiest of locations. Mirai Grill resides in the Best Western Hotel near Airway, best known for housing Teddy’s Flame Room.
The setting is colorful and casual, employing the same order-and-pay-at-the- counter process as the other locations. Menus are also similar, offering chicken and beef teriyaki rice bowls, curry rice, spicy ginger gochujang (chicken, beef or tofu), yakisoba noodles and Korean ramen. Exclusive to the location are sashimi salad, spicy tuna salad, tempura shrimp and vegetables and vegan sushi rolls. Indecisive diners should opt for the tempura box consisting of chicken or beef teriyaki, tempura vegetables, choice of rice and a California roll.
Chef Tommy’s creativity and presentation skills shine through his six new vegan sushi options, all made with black rice. The vegan lover roll will convert anyone to a herbivore lifestyle with spicy tofu, vegan cheese, cucumber and jalapeno rolled in nori that’s lightly tempura-battered and fried, dotted with mayo and sriracha and served atop an umami-rich shiitake teriyaki sauce. Sushi lovers accustomed to the pescatarian variety will find sixteen options, including a sunkissed roll that tops a spicy tuna roll (tuna and cucumber wrapped in nori and rice with sesame seeds) with fresh salmon and sliced avocado. Occasionally, off-the-menu sushi items like the summer special rolls are offered.
Mirai Grill also offers a sweet mochi trio and fried ice cream for dessert. The new location provides a nice escape from the ordinary; you’ll feel like you’re in another city. Visit on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for half off sushi happy hour.
