There are three things that no one should ever outgrow: grilled cheese sandwiches, mac and cheese and Star Wars. A local food truck is making sure this never happens with one epic sandwich called The Empire Strikes Mac. Their signature item piles pulled pork over creamy sriracha mac and cheese and tops it off with avocado slices on Texas toast. Since April of 2014, Sgt. Cheddar’s has been creating a variety of six grilled cheese specialties, along with beer-battered fries and sweet potato fries.
If you insist on maturing, order The Grown Up, which blends Gouda, Brie, Monterrey jack and cheddar with pesto on sourdough bread. Everything great about tacos can be found in the The Spicy Mexican, which loads chorizo, bacon, mushrooms, grilled onions, jack cheese, pickled onions and toreados into one sandwich. The All American is the only grilled cheese topped off with a fried egg, but we’re almost certain you can convince them to top off any of their signature sandwiches in the same manner. Kitschy decadence comes to mind with the Maui Monterrey creation – ham, jack, chorizo and pineapple are held together by four King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls. Purists can opt for The Plain Jane, which is none other than American cheese on buttered Texas toast.
Sgt. Cheddar’s has a grilled cheese for everyone except vegans and lactose intolerants, but they do have crispy fries that go great with their spicy ketchup. Also not to be missed is their refreshing Arnold Palmer, a classic drink that layers iced tea on top of freshly made lemonade – stir it up for a perfectly tart and sweetened drink. As the weather cools down, here’s hoping they bring back last season’s tomato basil soup.
