It was a shock when Cappetto’s, originally located at Montana, abruptly shut down after 56 years of business. A few months later, owners announced that a revamped version would open in the Cincinnati area at the former Dane’s Steakhouse location. The new Cappetto’s sports a minimal modern design with a large bar in the center and an open kitchen.
The menu is rather expansive with five pages divided into various pastas, pizzas, salads, pizzas and strombolis, paninis, sandwiches, seafood, chicken, veal and beef, steak and chops. Fans of the original location will be happy to know that most of the original menu items were retained, including baked chicken Angelo and pasta Isabella (fresh tomatoes, green onions and jalapenos tossed with rigatoni and Swiss and mozzarella cheeses). Meals still begin with their warm, generously buttered bread, but simple iceberg salads that accompany entrees have been replaced with mixed greens.
Appetizers include fried provolone cheese sticks, mussels sautéed in white wine and served with marinara, large Gulf shrimp tossed in a cream sauce of gorgonzola, Swiss and parmesan cheeses, and more. Minestrone soup is always available, but a small-batch roasted poblano cream soup was on the featured menu. The feature menu, which occasionally changes, included fettuccine with chicken in a tequila lime cream sauce, grilled salmon salad with orange basil vinaigrette and a pizza topped with chorizo and carnitas.
What really shines at Nuovo is their choice of over ten homemade dessert offerings. You can stick with traditional tiramisu and cannoli or opt for chocolate ravioli or double strawberry cheesecake made with goat cheese. Be sure to visit on Sundays for their brunch, which features Huevos Rancheros Italianos, frittatas, various eggs Benedict styles, cannoli-stuffed French toast and more. The new location lacks the charm and warmth of the old location, but makes up for it with friendly wait staff and new, imaginative dishes.
