The early bird might get the worm, but night crawlers have their share of goodies, too. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, bartenders threw down their fiercest mixology skills during the Hendrick’s Gin Bartender Challenge at The Venue. Hosted by Republic National Distributing Company, contestants from bars like Hope & Anchor, TradeCraft, Prickly Elder, Born and Raised and Murray’s vied for a bottle of Hendrick’s Gin, infused with rose and cucumber, and a $200 gift card.

Matt Scarbro of Blackbird Cantina Deluxe placed first after creating a concoction of rose water, simple syrup, hibiscus extract, wild berry hibiscus tea, cardamom, egg whites and lemon juice. Called Catch the Bouquet, the cocktail was topped with rose petals, star anise and grounded hibiscus.

That following Saturday at the San Carlos Building, vendors gathered for their first Downtown Night Market outside of 501 Bistro. Attendees got to enjoy homegrown veggies from Unity Community Yoga & Produce, vintage finds, art, homemade makeup, jewelry, Good Days Trading’s packaged superfood and Social Ice’s cold sweets made with coconut, cucumber and mango.
