| | Dancing in the City continues this weekend | | By Mia R. Cortez | |
Arts Festival Plaza downtown transforms into an open-air salsa-dancing venue again this Saturday for Dancing in the City, an outdoor music and dancing event organized by the city’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD).
Last Saturday, about 200 people, both couples and singles, participated in the lessons and dancing that followed. Local Latin band Sobredosis de Sabor provided lessons.
“There’s a big salsa following in El Paso; there are more salsa lessons and dances being incorporated at local bars and clubs,” said Erika Villegas, production coordinator for MCAD. “This hasn’t been done before, so it inspired us.”
At www.salsaelpaso.com, Wet Ultra Lounge, House of Rock, Shundo Studio, El Paso Ballroom Studio and La Condesa advertise salsa nights ranging from Wednesdays to Sundays. Villegas said she also knows of salsa nights at Brick and Mortars and Dominics Italian Restaurant.
Scheduling Dancing in the City over two weekends helped boost participation and interest in the event, Villegas said.
“It’s a big trend. I know people who go straight from work to salsa lessons – it’s even a good workout,” Villegas said.
Team Havana is scheduled to perform this Saturday at the plaza. Lessons are from 7 – 8 p.m. Dancing continues until 10 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person or $8 per couple. Drinks and food are for sale at the Oasis Lounge.
